The KL Initiatives

 

THE KUALA LUMPUR INITIATIVES

The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM), the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK), the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO), the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) met in Kuala Lumpur from  26th to 28th of November 2006 and consulted with over 670 participants representing policy makers, industrialists, academicians, NGOs, representatives from ASEAN and East Asia countries as well as other international stakeholders,

  • DELIBERATED many energy and climate related issues for sustainable development in Asia;
  • CONCERNED with the realities of fast depleting reserves in fossil fuels and the uncertainty in oil prices as well as the problem of CO2 emission that has substantially contributed to the peril of global warming faced by mankind;
  • APPRECIATED that many countries in ASEAN and other neighbouring countries are still undergoing various stages of development; and  thereby
  • RESOLVED that all stakeholders in ASEAN and neighbouring countries be urged to focus on holistic and workable initiatives to bring about sustainable development in Asia.    

Accordingly, the joint organisers (ACCCIM and AAET) and the supporting organizations (CAE, EAJ, NEAK, AFEO, ASM and IEM) shall individually and through multilateral efforts forthwith endeavour to work in collaboration with International bodies on the following initiatives.

 

THE INITIATIVES:

(i)           Agree to continue holding the International Energy Conference for Sustainable Asia, at least once every two years, with the host country rotating among ASEAN countries with cooperation of academies and experts of the neighbouring countries. The host country for the next International Energy Conference shall be Indonesia;

(ii)     Create awareness amongst commerce and industry fraternities as well as the general public of the many challenges and opportunities related to energy and climate changes, new energy resources and the use of new energy conservation and energy efficiency technologies;

(iii)    Motivate the commerce and industry fraternities, the academics, the federations and institutions of engineers in ASEAN and the neighbouring countries to support greater energy development cooperation in the ASEAN Economic Community as well as for the alleviation of poverty.
